You and I are part of the mighty, ever-growing river of Christianity - the one and only body of Christ. And within that mighty river are many currents. Each current cannot make up the entire river. And the entire river would not be the river without the many different currents. I have been growing in my appreciation for the many different currents within the river. Each current has a set of strengths and weaknesses. Each current has certain emphases and blindspots.
I am prone to swinging between two ditches. Focusing solely on the weaknesses in the current I find myself in while seeing all the amazing strengths in the other currents. Or focusing primarily on my current’s amazing attributes while minimizing the strengths that other currents have. I want to fight for the healthy middle. Embracing the amazing spiritual blessings that God has given us in our current while valuing the contribution that each current brings to the entire river.
I am part of the universal body of Christ. And I belong to a faith heritage that has many gifts and blessings. It is the result of many faithful men and women who stewarded what God gave them and sought to pass it along to the next generation. I recognize we have our quirks, our weaknesses, our blindspots. My generation has the amazing opportunity to build on the gifts and blessings and to learn from the quirks, weaknesses and blindspots.
The question is, how will we handle the gifts and blessings that we have been given? Will we fall into preservationism and bury what we’ve been given? Will we despise what we’ve been given and discard it? Or will we steward the gifts and blessings that we’ve received with gratefulness and humility and invest it in the Kingdom of Christ—for His honor and glory?
